Description
Stokowski - Music For Strings / Full Dimensional Sound / EMI Classics Audio CD 1996 Stereo / 7243 5 65912 2 6 UPC 724356591226 // Leopold Anthony Stokowski (18 April 1882 – 13 September 1977) was a British conductor. One of the leading conductors of the early and mid-20th century, he is best known for his long association with the Philadelphia Orchestra and his appearance in the Disney film Fantasia with that orchestra. He was especially noted for his free-hand conducting style that spurned the traditional baton and for obtaining a characteristically sumptuous sound from the orchestras he directed. Stokowski was music director of the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, the Philadelphia Orchestra, the NBC Symphony Orchestra, New York Philharmonic Symphony Orchestra, the Houston Symphony Orchestra, the Symphony of the Air and many others. He was also the founder of the All-American Youth Orchestra, the New York City Symphony, the Hollywood Bowl Symphony Orchestra and the American Symphony Orchestra. Stokowski conducted the music for and appeared in several Hollywood films, most notably Disney's Fantasia, and was a lifelong champion of contemporary composers, giving many premieres of new music during his 60-year conducting career. Stokowski, who made his official conducting debut in 1909, appeared in public for the last time in 1975 but continued making recordings until June 1977, a few months before his death at the age of 95. /// Label: EMI Classics – 7243 5 65912 2 6 Series: Full Dimensional Sound Format: CD, Compilation Country: US Released: 1996 Genre: Classical Style: Classical, Baroque // Tracklist: 1 Hornpipe (From King Arthur's Suite) Composed By – Henry Purcell 0:51 2 Aria From Suite No. 3 In D Composed By – Johann Sebastian Bach 6:59 3 Mein Jesu, Was Für Seelenweh Befällt Dich In Gethsemane Composed By – Johann Sebastian Bach 5:05 4 Preludio (Partitia In E Major) Composed By – Johann Sebastian Bach 3:44 5 Tamburino (From Alcina) Composed By – Georg Friedrich Händel 1:18 6 Dance Of The Blessed Spirits (From Orpheus And Eurydice) Composed By – Christoph Willibald Gluck 8:09 7 Lento (From Iphegenia In Aulis) Composed By – Christoph Willibald Gluck 3:12 8 Musette (From Armide) Composed By – Christoph Willibald Gluck 1:53 9 Menuet Arranged By – Stokowski Composed By – Luigi Boccherini 2:27 10 Moto Perpetuo Composed By – Niccolò Paganini 3:50 11 Nocturne (From Quartet #2 In D) Composed By – Alexander Borodin 8:47 12 Andante Cantabile (From String Quartet No. 1 In D, Op. 11) Arranged By – Stokowski Composed By – Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky 8:06 13 Vocalise, Op. 34 No. 14 Composed By – Sergei Vasilyevich Rachmaninoff 7:28 14 La Oracion Del Torere Composed By – Joaquín Turina 11:15 15 Rondino Giocoso Composed By – Theodor Berger 4:26 Conductor – Leopold Stokowski Liner Notes – Hans Fantel Orchestra –Leopold Stokowski Symphony Orchestra
